Abstract
In this study, the thermomechanical analysis of two specimens welded together with an FGM-based welding wire has been conducted employing the finite element method in Ansys Workbench software. In the transient thermal analysis, the element death-and-birth technique was taken into account to simulate the welding process, with the generated temperature gradient accounting for a thermal loading distribution to analyze stress and strain in the Static Structural environment. Findings indicate that different values of material
gradation could substantially influence the results. It was also revealed that the lower level of gradation of elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal conductivity coefficient, the lower the level of stress and strain. Regarding temperature-dependent properties, the coefficient of thermal expansion varrying by temperature causes less stress than simulations in which such parameter is independent of temperature. Depending on the temperature, on the other hand, thermal conductivity coefficient as well as heat capacity, cause the amount of stress and strain to rise, as opposed to their constant state with temperature. Last but not least, the lower the welding speed, the lower the stress and strain. The outcomes of this piece of research can be used to assess the appropriate characteristics of welding wires made of FGM in the industry.. Regarding the novelty and innovation of this research, a review of existing literature reveals that no prior studies have analyzed stress distribution in conventional welding wires compared to those made from Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). Therefore, this study aims to address this gap.
